SIEM REAP - CAMBODIA
Sister Srey Cafe is a social enterprise in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Established in 2012, Sister Srey was started to be a place for “Good Coffee” whilst creating a supportive space to educate and empower Cambodians.
Our vision at Sister Srey Cafe is to support young Khmer students who struggle to keep a balance between study and supporting their family. Each staff member is trained in hospitality, English language skills, personal development, health & hygiene and banking. We are a stepping stone to a brighter future and a means for them to have skills and knowledge to approach the world empowered and confident.
Striving for a safer Cambodia, Sister Srey Cafe proudly supports APOPO Humanitarian Demining, by donating a percentage of our profits. Landmines still affect people in 60 countries around the world. The negative impact posed by landmines to the development of Cambodia is immeasurable. Leftover landmines from the conflict remain active and dangerous long after the hostilities ended; causing terror and killing indiscriminately. Landmines not only cause tragic accidents, they are a barrier to development, constraining communities and denying access to fertile land, travel routes and basic needs. APOPO, alongside local partner the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) is conducting a humanitarian ladmine clearance project in Cambodia, targeting the most mine-affected villages in order to return safe, productive land back to communities where it makes the biggest impact. APOPO’s landmine detection rats fondly nicknamed “HeroRATS” are too light to detonate the landmines and are very quick at finding them, making them a perfect “tool” for speeding up detection and clearance.
Sister Srey has various incentives and activities in which support the local and rural community such as donating lunches to charitable events closest to our hearts, supporting small businesses & farmers and working with other social enterprises.
At the cafe, we are also extremely passionate about environmental sustainability, trying wherever possible to reuse, reduce & recycle. Sister Srey is one of the founders of the Siem Reap “Cafe Collective”- a group of cafes in working together to help support a better future for the industry and the environment through various shared initiatives. The Srey Team are also active members of Siem Reap’s "Clean up Temple town" where members of the community volunteer to pick up rubbish around town and create a cleaner environment. Additionally, Sister Srey is part of the Refill Not Landfill campaign whose aim is to reduce disposable water bottle waste with approximately 85 refill stations in Siem Reap, and over 800 in all of Asia. As well as recycling plastic & cans, we also send all of our food waste to a small farm to be reused as fertilizer and food for livestock. We’re always looking for new ways to cut down on our waste and help protect our beautiful planet!
Sister Srey is a cafe with a heart, a cafe with the desire to see change and with the ability to do so.
